Narragansett High School

Introduction:
Narragansett High School is a high profiled academic school which is located in Narragansett, Washington County. This high school excels over the states qualifications and is known to be one of the best. The profile of this school will show all the different aspects that are looked at when researching a school, such as the community background, the district summary and the overall school analysis which describes testing scores,academic goals that have been reached and if the standards have been met in the No Child Left Behind Act. All of these aspects will be beneficial to any parent, new resident and future faculty member to become more familiar with the area.



Community Background:
The Narragansett community is much like the high school in the sense that it is a small. The community is located in southern Rhode Island, not far from the University of Rhode Island. The town of Narragansett was first incorporated in 1901, prior to that time it was part of South Kingstown. (Town of Narragansett, 2007) Local history in Narragansett was dated back to 1675 when Roland Robinson settled in South County and purchased land from the Narragansett Indians in Point Judith and Pettaquamscutt. (Town of Narragansett, 2007) The section will discuss the community's diversity rate, population and economic outlook.

Along with the Narragansett community not being very large, it is also not very diverse. In this community the majority of the people are White. Narragansett has a relatively high percentage of white residents, as does the entire state of Rhode Island and the United States. Hispanic and Latino residents have the second highest percentage rate but still does not come close to comparing to the percentage of white residents. Asians are the minority in the state of Rhode Island and the United States but African Americans are the minority in Narragansett, Rhode Island.(Infoworks!,2008) It comes to conclusion that the Narragansett community, along with the United States as a whole, has the highest percentage of white's and that every other culture is presumed a minority.

The support by the community is vital in a school district and varies by size. In 2000, Narragansett ranked 23rd in population among Rhode Island's 39 cities and towns. Narragansett, Rhode Island has a relatively average household and family income. Median household income ($50,363) and median family income ($67,571) are lower than the state ($51,814) and higher than the US median income ($48,451) respectively. Narragansett has a small number of families that are poor compared to the state of Rhode Island. (Infoworks,2008) The median age of the town was 36.4. The community is mostly populated by adults, in 2000, 82.7% or 13,528 persons residing in Narragansett were 18 years of age or older. 12,464 residents were 21 and over, 2,632 were 62 and over, and 2,216 were 65 and over. The total number of housing units in 2000 was 9,159. Of the 9,159 housing units 2,313 were vacant, as for 2,035 of the vacant units were for seasonal of recreational use. In 2000, there were 6,846 households in Narragansett with an average size of 2.38 persons. Of these, 3,846 were family households with an average family size of 2.86 persons. The town mostly depends on tourism and other developments are mostly centered on waterfront activities.(Census Bureau,2006). Because of this, the population increases during the summer months and the town is inhabited by families.


District Summary:

The Narragansett School District is filled with high performing schools and has made adequate progress over the years. With 1,514 students and 173 teachers, the district's teacher to student ratio is 1:8, which is better than the state of Rhode Island's ratio which is 1:10.Along with the ratio of teachers to students, the amount of money spent on each district and student is important as well. The Narragansett School District spends $24,348,148 on their students, with an average of $16,082 per child.(Infoworks, 2008) For the Special Education population an average of $17,569 is spent on each child, which is pretty close to the state spending, and average of $25,968. (RI Department of Education, October 5, 2007) Grades kindergarten to twelfth grade have a 15.4% of students who receive IEP’s.

Subsidized lunch programs reflect the economic rate of the district and school. Only 10% of students in the Narragansett district are eligible for subsidized lunch programs. Having only 10% of students receive lunch from the subsidized program concludes that a majority of the school has enough money to pay for lunch and does not need help from the district. This district meets all the required standards, and also excels over the quota in many aspects, such as standardized testing in the categories of mathematics and English language arts. (Infoworks!, 2008) Rhode Island also has standards for all of its teachers, All elementary and secondary teachers must have a Bachelors degree, full state certification. They also must show that they are knowledgeable in the subject matter by having a major or taking a series of tests. (Infoworks!,2007)

Depending on the state and community, the population of students that go to public school varies. 81% of Rhode Island students go to public schools in Narragansett because the schools are just as good as private schools. The graduation rate for the Narragansett district is 95.6% which exceeds the states standards of 75.3%. (Infoworks!,2008) The Narragansett school district exceeds all of the state standards and that concludes that the district of Narragansett is a district with one of the highest education rates.



School Analysis:

Narragansett High School is a school that helps students achieve many of their highest goals and dreams. This Rhode Island high school educates ninth grade to twelfth grade students and its relatively small, serving only 524 students. (Narragansett School System, 2008) The teacher to student ratio for Narragansett High School is 1:10. The schools attendance rate is 94% which is higher than the state of Rhode Island's which is only 90%. (Infoworks!, 2008) The school has so much to offer to its students, such as physical education programs that include gym, adventure learning, and advanced weight training. (Narragansett School System, 2008) The school also provides many clubs and activities so that every student at the school has the opportunity to fit in and participate in something they enjoy. Along with having a variety of activities at school, having parental involvement is crucial to a successful education. The percentage of parental involvement in equal in both the state of Rhode Island and the high school, with a percentage of 45%. Instruction such as tutors and after school programs are important in school, the instruction that is offered at Narragansett High School is 48%, while it is only about 38% in the state.

Narragansett High School also excels over the state of Rhode Island in the school climate percentage. The high schools percentage is 75% and the states is 70%. (Infoworks!,2008) Another important aspect that is looked at in schools in order to rank the schools knowledge is standardized testing. Narragansett High School performs higher on Math and English Progress exams than the quota of all Rhode Island Schools. The percentage of progress in the Math exams varies over the years but still remains within a 10% radius of the previous years. And the percentage of progress in the English exams varies over the years but still remains in a 2% radius of the previous years.( Infoworks!, 2008) Narragansett High School is academically higher than the average Rhode Island School. Along with standardized testing, graduation rate is another aspect that reflects on the school itself. As for the population of students who went to school on a regular basis,the graduation rate for Narragansett High School is 96% which is higher than the states expectations of 89% which has been collected in 2007-2008 graphs. (Infoworks!,2008) With Narragansett High School having an almost perfect graduation rate, it reflects how the students do during the school year, it shows that the school disciplines its students enough to make sure they do everything necessary to graduate.

Most importantly, Narragansett High School has to be able to meet the standards of the No Child Left Behind Act. In 2007, the target graduation rate was 79.2% (Infoworks!, 2008) and Narragansett High was able to meet those standards and actually beat them highly by about 9%. Along with graduation rates, the high school was able to meet the target standards for the Index Proficiency Scores in 2006-2007 with an English Language Arts score of 91.3, and the target standard only being 75.0. As for the Mathematics section of the proficiency exams, meeting the target rate with a score of 82.6 and the target standard only configuring 63.2. (Infoworks!,2008) Narragansett High School has met 10 out of the 11 evaluated targets, putting the high school in a caution of 10/11. (Infoworks!,2008)



Conclusion:

Narragansett may come across as a typical small town, although the academics of the school have been rising with the years. Narragansett is a quiet vacation and tourist location that no one would generally see as a great academic location. According to the information on the Information Works!,2008 site, it is shown that Narragansett High School has excelled academically and has met almost all of the states standards, which overall make Narragansett High School a knowledgeable location to send children. This high performing high school is proficient in most standards required by the state of Rhode Island and the No Child Left Behind Act. Narragansett High School reached all of its targets except for one, leaving the high school in caution of 10/11 but is generally a great place where children can do well and experience many different opportunities. The Narragansett community is made up of middle class families that are primarily white and the education of the community is averaged at being of high school diploma standards. As for the district, Narragansett has one of the highest education rates and notable characteristics. It may be presumed that the whole Narragansett High School may be admired after summarizing that most of the NCLB standards for the 2007-2008 school year have been met.
